Admiral Sushil Kumar assumed the charge of Navy as Chief of the Naval Staff on 30 Dec1998. He is a specialist in amphibious warfare and Hydrography.

His earlier assignments include that of Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Naval Command and Fortress Commander Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Admiral Sushil Kumar is an alumni of the National Defence College (1987 batch) and had been an instructor at the Defence Services Staff College. His training abroad includes a deputation to the Royal Navy onboard HMS Dampier in 1963 and course in Amphibious Warfare with the US Navy at Coronado, San Diego, in 1976.

Admiral Sushil Kumar had been decorated four times. As the Director of Naval Operations, in 1988 he was awarded UYSM medal for operations and earlier while in command of INS Ghorpad, he was decorated for gallantry with the Nao Sena Medal.

Admiral Sushil Kumar is a keen polo player and a yachtsman.
