Precautions for Common Cold

Common Cold

(a) At one time or another, you have probably had to miss work or cancel plans because of a cold. Everyone is familiar with the symptoms-runny nose, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, and sometimes cough, body aches, headaches and fever.

(b) What Causes Colds Viruses are the main culprits. This is important to remember, because there is still no effect treatment for the thousands of viruses that can cause cold symptoms. A few illnesses, such a pneumonia resemble viral infections but are caused by bacteria and can be treated. Thus, if you have a sore throat, severe coughing, or persistent fever, check with your doctor.

What should you do if you have a Cold

(i)

Stay home

(ii)

Take appropriate doses of acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen as needed for fever and aches. Caution : Avoid aspirin products and ibuprofen if you have ever had an ulcer or if there is a possibility (especially in children) of influenza or chicken pox.

(iii)

Take cough medication for a cough and decongestant for runny nose.

(iv)

Use a vaporizer in your bedroom

(v)

Drink lots of fluids.

(vi)

Get plenty of rest

(d) When should you see a Doctor Although you can usually weather a cold without seeking medical advice, call your doctor if you have any of the following:-

(i) Severe diabetes, heart disease, or lung disease
(ii) Severe pain in the chest, ear, stomach or throat
(iii) Worsening of symptoms after you have been getting better
(iv) A new fever after the first 2 or 3 days
(v) Symptoms that continue unchanged for more than 10 days
(vi) A cold that is much worse than usual

(e) Why shouldn’t you take and Antibiotic for an uncomplicated cold

(i) It will not be effective against a viral infection
(ii) It may cause an allergic reaction
(iii) It may cause an annoying side effect, or a secondary infection, such as difficult to treat pneumonia
