There are eight students in the Primary Group. They are in the age group of 9-14 years and are with varied abilities. They have mild to moderate I.Q. levels. These students undergo training programs based on the NIMH check list, which includes activities of daily living, functional academics, occupational skills, communication skills & leisure activities. The performance of the primary and secondary group children has been found to be excellent in self-care skills.

Communication Skills are of utmost importance, as the child learns to talk spontaneously with others, greet and wish, seek help and learns to convey messages.

Functional Academics include concepts of number, time and money. The children are taught identification and meaningful counting of numbers 1-60. One-digit addition by finger counting which would help them in shopping from the market in future, and application of arithmetic skills which would help them to solve everyday problems in calculation. As a survival tool, an attempt is made to teach the children to read the time by learning the position of the small & big hand of the clock. The children are also taught to read survival words by interpreting pictures on sign boards i.e ambulance hospital , ladies /gents’ toilets , post office , danger/ poison , etc.

Occupational Skills include majority of house-keeping activities. The children learn to decorate and arrange rooms, wash plates and glasses and set the lunch/dinner table. They also learn to assist in the kitchen.

Recreational Skills cover a host of indoor activities like drawing, coloring, collage-making, story telling, watching television etc., An activity that the children particularly enjoy doing is ‘marble painting’. They first mix paint in water and then dip white paper in this, allowing it to dry thereafter. The various patterns that evolve are a source of pleasure and much wonder to the children. This activity also increases their eye-hand coordination and strengthens their color concepts.

Outdoor Activity includes dance, music, yoga, drill, games and various sports like cricket and football. These games help the children to improve their eye-hand coordination and encourage them to follow group rules. Adjusting and accommodating with other players in the group, is something they learn through these games.
