 CARE GROUP

There are six students and each student has a different level , as diagnosed by a Clinical Psychologist at INHS Kalyani. Along with help from an Assistant teacher and one or two helper staff, the children are trained in various skills like personal, social and recreational skills. The skills have been selected according to the NIMH checklist and with cooperation from parents, long term and short term goals for students are identified.

An Individualized Education Program (I.E.P.) is developed and followed for each child. Decisions on what to teach are based on an objective assessment of each child. The teaching method emphasizes breaking of the learning tasks into small and obtainable steps. Students with a severe handicap require a more systematic and precise teaching model to help them to learn skills in even smaller steps.

The students are taught Activities of Daily Living (A.D.L.) like self care skills, which include basic skills like eating, toilet-training, dressing and undressing as  is very important to make them as independent as possible.

The students in this group experience great difficulty in communicating by spoken language, so other methods which include gestures, written words and communication boards are used . Behavioral problems that occur at school using such methods as may be suitable, like re-structuring of environment, giving rewards, differential re-enforcement etc., are also part of the programme.
